is perceived as possibly having terrorist links because his middle name is Hussein. This is preposterous, but one can imagine that the typical American that appears Middle Eastern would be
more likely to be accused of something they did not do. Similarly, someone who travels through the U.S. and appears suspicious can be falsely accused of a crime and have
little recourse. The student goes on to remark that heated debates have ensued regarding whether it is relevant to even discuss the ethnicity of someone accused of a crime. Zia
(2001) warns that people in the United States should be wary of racial profiling. Of course, the concept of profiling in respect to those who may be terrorists is
controversial. Profiling is something that is discouraged because of the potential for abuse. Soon after 9/11, passengers would become uncomfortable traveling with Arabs and in fact, some were not allowed
to board an airplane. This situation was viewed in a negative light as many American citizens are from the Middle East. Why should they be prohibited from flying? Yet, arguably,
profiling is a good method to use because most terrorists are from a handful of countries and time is wasted trying to make it appear as if profiling is not
utilized. Many people argue that the police should look at people who look like terrorist as opposed to choosing a white, elderly woman from a lineup just to make things
fair. The other side of the coin again is the fact that there are many people from Middle Eastern countries who are honest and good. They should not be bothered
