organizations involved and the tactics they used. The Movement The Civil Rights Movement is generally considered to have been at its height in the 1950s and 1960s, though the
struggle began earlier. But in the 1950s, things began to change as blacks started to fight in earnest. Mary Church Terrell was denied service at a restaurant, and
filed suit for discrimination (Bush, 2003). In 1953, the Supreme Court ruled in her favor, saying that "discrimination and segregation in public places are unlawful" (Bush, 2003, p. 42).
Possibly the most important civil rights case of the period was Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka, which was also heard by the Supreme Court.
In this landmark decision, the Court "ruled that separate but equal schools were not really equal" (Bush, 2003, p. 42). Forcing black students to attend segregated schools deprived them
of the equal rights guaranteed by the Constitution and the Court ordered Americas schools desegregated with all deliberate speed" (Bush, 2003, p. 42). The battles that ensued following this
decision are shameful episodes in the nations troubled history. Another landmark in the struggle occurred just a year later, when a woman named Rosa Parks, tired from a long day
at work, refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus to a white man (Bush, 2003). She was arrested and jailed, infuriating the black community, which launched
the famous "Montgomery Bus Boycott" (Bush, 2003, p. 42). The result was amazing: "No blacks rode the buses, and the city lost so much money that the law
was discarded" (Bush, 2003, p. 42). At this same time, a young minister named Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) rose to prominence
