was considered a given fact that women did not participate in public life, but were rather represented by their husband (fathers, sons, etc.) in the public arena and "men" also
excluded slaves who were still defined as chattel, i.e. property, is the legal code. Some Found Fathers saw the injustice in this, as James Madison proposes in the Federalist Papers
that slavery is an abomination that should be abolished, but it would take a costly Civil War to accomplish this monumental task. History of slavery Slavery was prevalent during
the colonial period. However, Congress banned slave trade beginning in 1808, as specified in the Constitution, which dictated that this should occur within a twenty-year period of its ratification. While
the North became increasing industrialized, the South became increasingly dependent on agriculture and slave labor as a means of production. Conflicts between the North and South erupted with more frequently
as new western states were added to the union. Abolitionist movement: William Lloyd Garrison, a white man, founded the American Anti-Slavery Society
in 1833 and this organization had more than a quarter of a million members by 1838, which was huge proportion of the overall population of the North at that time.
