a troop which is many people. When the media says "3 troops were killed" they are talking about individuals when the word really means a group. With that in mind
the following paper examines the term "civil liberties" and, utilizing an essay titled "Security versus Civil Liberties" by Richard A. Posner, discusses what the word means, how the media seems
to define it and how it is used to mislead people in their perceptions of society and political activities. Civil Liberties According to the ACLU (The American Civil
Liberties Union), "Civil liberties include freedom of speech, press, religion, and association; due process; equal protection; and privacy" (ACLU). As would perhaps be easily recognized these are elements laid down
in the Constitution of the United States of America. They are particular rights that do not differentiate between race, etc. When one speaks of civil rights they are talking about
"voting rights; discrimination based on disability, race, sex, sexual orientation, religion or national origin; police reform; and workers rights" (ACLU). For the most part when people envision the civil
liberties they believe that the Constitution allows freedom in all areas that the society deems necessary. However, there are conditions in the society that do not speak of civil liberties
but of civil rights. And, according to Posner, "the Framers left most of the constitutional provisions that confer rights pretty vague" (769). As such it seems that while the society
is entitled to particular civil liberties, they can be considered vague and allusive in many cases. This is perhaps why the media has a tendency to cloud terms and the
