concept is vague and yet citizenship is something sought by many. Every year people flock to the United States to become citizens and not only be endowed with privileges but
also to be an integral part of the society. What is perhaps not said in the definition, and one has to read between the lines, is that implicit in the
concept of citizenship is not only that people need to be good Samaritans, but also that they should play a role in running the government, at least in a democratic
society. Although todays Untied States embraces a representative democracy, it can also be said that Athenian democracy was representative as well. Most definitions of democracy today is simply that
a nation is ruled by its people. In ancient Athens, it meant rule by the demos, or citizens (McLeish, 1995). While the definitions essentially mean the same thing, there are
differences of opinion in terms of the fundamentals of democracy. In ancient Greece, the concept was taken literally (1995). In other words, the people literally ruled. Citizens, who were male
and over the age of thirty, which was equivalent to about a quarter of the residents in fifth century Athens, were the leaders (1995). Of course, one has to pause
and notice that this is not equality. It means that only the men ruled. Although it was perhaps more "hands on" the truth is that it was no more direct,
or fair, than the system that exists today. Many would argue that today, women do vote and in fact it is a fair system. At the same time, one
could delve into the current American political system that seems to be flawless with its checks and balances and say that there are problems. There is supposed to be equality,
