one could possess, and perhaps should possess, in relationship to citizenship, and is so doing they can understand themselves, and humanity, in a more intelligent way. The following paper offers
up different views concerning citizenship, and what it is to be human, across the world. The paper utilizes Socrates Symposium, Sophocles Oedipus the King and Antigone, Dalai Lamas Ethics for
the New Millennium, Pope John Paul IIs Centesimus Annus, and Martha Nussbaums Cultivating Humanity. Citizenship Socrates, in Platos Symposium, primarily talks
of many issues that seem almost personal, such as those that involve love and issues of sexuality. But in this work there is the strong mention and focus on virtue,
a very important human concern and citizen concer. He states, "For we have a custom, and according to our custom any one who does service to another under the idea
that he will be improved by him either in wisdom, or, in some other particular of virtue-such a voluntary service, I say, is not to be regarded as a dishonour,
and is not open to the charge of flattery" (Plato). While Socrates then discusses the love of youth, possibly referring to having a deep and moving, if not sexual, love
for young people, he also mentions the condition of philosophy and virtue. He combines the two in presenting the reader with an understanding that can well be related to possessing
virtue, a very important characteristic of citizenship, and love and compassion for others. He states how "he is right in showing any kindness...making him wise and good; the one capable
