regarded as living beings, beings which not only impact those that live in them but the world as a whole. In turn, however, cities themselves are impacted by the
circumstances and events which unfold in the world. The manner in which cities evolve has fascinated mankind for centuries. New York is one of the most interesting cities
in regard to its evolution. Certeau (93) observes that while Rome learned to grow old by "playing on all its parts, New York never learned that lesson. Instead
this great city thrives on continual change, change entails both the disposal of the glories of the citys past and the continual emphasis on the future. Each city, however,
changes over time. Some change differently than others but the factors at play are often very similar. City evolution often
involves a great deal of planning. Certeau (94) notes the process of planning a citys growth involves thinking:
"the very plurality of the real and to make that way of thinking plural effective, to know how to articulate it and be able to do
it" Continually using the idea of walking through the spaces of a city, Certeau reviews
the various processes which go into city planning. He clarifies that: "the net of
walking is to the urban system what the speech net is to language or to the statements uttered" (Certeau 97).
