in 1984, Cisco Systems set the standard on which many of todays networks are built. The company is extremely strong in its position, not only in the industry but
also with its customers. It is the worldwide leader in WAN technology and hardware, and has had less difficulty than some others riding out the demise of network spending
since 2001. The purpose here is to assess the economics of using Cisco products and examine the success of its transfer of technology. Economics
Some of Cisco competitors products cost less, but it is still Cisco that can claim the greatest cost efficiency because of the reliability of its products. A
less expensive product becomes far too costly when it fails and prevents the conduct of business. One systems consultant says that his customers
often will not discuss the possibility of using other vendors. Customers believe that the cost of reliability is high, and that Ciscos competitors - though less costly - may
well represent additional, hidden costs. "For many corporations, the value of an end-to-end Cisco network is more important than a perceived loss of pricing leverage or single-vendor dependence" (Hochmuth
and Duffy, 2003; p. 1). Because they are based on a common source, there are no compatibility issues with these applications. Though the organization has paid more for
a Cisco system, the savings in labor can more than justify the added cost of an all-Cisco network. One IT manager says that
