liver is another matter. The liver is a very important organ in the body and, as one author notes, "The liver is a large organ that sits in the right
upper abdomen, just under the right lung. It is one of the bodys most intelligent organs in that it performs so many different functions at the same time" (Jackson/Siegelbaum, 2009).
As such, when the liver suffers the body will suffer. The following paper offers an overview of cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis of the Liver History/Definition
"Cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver slowly deteriorates and malfunctions due to chronic injury. Scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue, partially blocking the
flow of blood through the liver" (National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, 2008). There are varying degrees of the disease but for the most part the following points indicate how scarring
impairs various functions of the liver: * control infections * remove bacteria and toxins from the blood * process nutrients, hormones, and drugs * make proteins
that regulate blood clotting * produce bile to help absorb fats-including cholesterol-and fat-soluble vitamins (National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, 2008). When
the liver is healthy it has the ability, when damaged, to regenerate its cells (National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, 2008). But, as the cirrhosis evolves the liver becomes less and
less able to function and in end stages the liver can no longer regenerate its own cells (National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, 2008).A healthy liver is able to regenerate most
of its own cells when they become damaged. With end-stage cirrhosis, the liver can no longer effectively replace damaged cells. Without a healthy and effective liver the body will not
