not to opt for circumcision in infancy. Some parents, such as Jewish parents, choose infant circumcision for religious reasons, but the majority of parents weigh this issue according to current
knowledge as to whether or not this procedure has discernible medical benefits. Even so, this is not an easy decision, as medical opinion is once again divided over this procedure.
Nevertheless, parents turn to healthcare professionals, such as nurses, for a considered opinion as to whether not to circumcise, and it is the nurses duty to inform them of
the latest research and its indications. In 1999, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a policy statement indicating that newborn circumcision was not a medical necessity and the
AAP position does not endorse circumcision as a prophylactic measure (Razmus and Wilson, 2004). However, in recent years, a number of authors have reported medical benefits associated with newborn circumcision
and have, subsequently, challenged the AAP position, calling for reconsideration. In light of this new data, issues surrounding circumcision are once more being debated and medical opinions are divided.
Pro Razmus and Wilson (2004) report that babies that are circumcised suffer fewer urinary tract infections; have a decreased incidence of developing penile cancer in later life; and are less
likely to transmit human papilloma virus (HPV). Furthermore, circumcision has been associated with protection against HIV infection (Razmus and Wilson, 2004). Substantiating this position, Schoen (2003) also states that circumcision
provides protection against penile dermatoses. There is also the argument that circumcision improves genital hygiene throughout life, especially during infancy and old age (Schoen, 2003). In particular, Schoen (2003)
