recipients. Male circumcision is in the majority of cases performed on infants at an early age, although older boys and adults may also undergo the procedure in order to correct
malformations of the prepuce. In some cases the motivation for the surgery is religious: all Jewish boys, for example, are circumcised because this is an essential component of Jewish religious
practice. Otherwise, it is carried out for reasons of hygiene, and
is much more common in some countries than others. In the USA, for instance, it is almost universal and parents have to request specifically that it not be carried out,
whereas in the UK it is an elective procedure. Those societies which do carry out the procedure as a matter of routine assert that there is a greater risk of
infection if the foreskin is left intact; those which do not, maintain that normal hygienic care of the penis is sufficient and that removal of the prepuce is not necessary.
Female circumcision, almost unknown in Western cultures, is mainly found
in certain Islamic communities and is a much more complex procedure than that carried out on males. It has its foundation in cultural and religious beliefs, which maintain that women
