rhythm. The disruption of the bodys rhythm can cause problems of all types, including physical illness, behavioral problems and physiological disorders among others. THE CIRCADIAN RHYTHM The circadian
rhythm of the body is a natural 24-hour rhythm based mostly on the internal temperature of our bodies. It cycles like day and night, with the lowest temperature occurring
around midnight. When this rhythm is disturbed and the body temperature fluctuates it can create all sorts of changes both mentally and physiologically. A good example would
be police officers doing rotating shift work. When on the night shift they are prone to feeling a little chillier about midnight, even though the temperature around them has
not changed. This is due to the internal temperature of the circadian rhythm. When those on the night shift reach their internal temperature low, also called the "trough"
(Circadian Rhythm Room 2002, PG) their body naturally tries to do either one or all of the following: * Uncontrollable urge to go to sleep. * Peripheral hallucinations
- the shift worker experiences seeing things out of the corner of their eyes that are not really there. * Shift paralysis a) individual knows they must move
but cant or b) individual knows they must move but give themselves every excuse in the book not to (Circadian Rhythm Room 2002, PG). The circadian rhythm
continues throughout the day by beginning to rise about daybreak, rising continually to a peak about noon. After this the temperature begins a slow descent. It is around
2:00 or so that the body experiences a drop in energy which some people attribute to having eaten lunch. This is most often not the case; it is a
