that Godard developed four "virtues" that are contrary to the traditional characteristics of Hollywood films, or, as he terms them, "the seven deadly sins of cinema" (Wollen 525). The
first of Wollens virtues that is evident in Rashomon is what Wollen terms "narrative intransitivity." This category is the opposite of the traditional approach of narrative transitivity, by
which, Wollen means the "sequence of events in which each unit (each function that changes the course of the narrative) follows the one preceding it according to a chain of
causation" (526). In other words, in the typical film, characters are introduced within an established norm, which is then disturbed, and the story narrative follows the chain reaction of events
that results from the disturbance until a new status quo is reestablished. Taking his cue from literature in which the story begins in medias res, that is, like Homers
Iliad, as well as countless other classics, rather than at the beginning, he begins the film in the middle. Wollen explains that Godard also borrowed an idea from picaresque novels,
which he defines as a "pseudo- autobiographical form...(which) substitutes a random and unconnected series of incidents" for tight plot construction (Wollen 526). While the student who is researching this topic
has probably viewed this film, this writer/tutor has not. Also, charges a considerable fee for watching a film in order to report it. Therefore, as the textbook
