can easily be argued that film portrayals of the gospel have extreme sociological significance due to the way film has come to be a major conveyer of cultural knowledge and societal paradigms. To demonstrate this significance, the following discussion/examination will focus on three films: The Gospel According to Saint Matthew, directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini in 1964; Jesus Christ Superstar, direct by Norman Jewison, Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson in 1973; and The Passion of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson in 2004. An overview of each movie demonstrates the directors interpretation of Jesus life and ministry; the way in which he was betrayed; and whether or not the film portrays Jesus as the Son of God. The Gospel According to Saint Matthew Surprisingly, since Pasolini was a devout atheist, who personal sympathies and worldview were highly influenced by the fact that he was homosexual and a devout Marxist, this film is the most traditionally oriented of the three, as it tells the story of the gospel with "unique beauty and power," using only the words of the Bible ("The gospel..."). The narrative is presented in two parts, which follow the gospel account closely. The opening scene shows Mary, silently standing before Joseph, who appears puzzled. Joseph leaves his home, and is confronted by an angel who convinces him that Mary has told the truth. The next scenes dramatize the "birth of Jesus; the three wise men bring him gifts; (and) Joseph, Mary and their baby fleeing to Egypt" to avoid the Herods proclamation to slaughter all male infants ("The gospel..."). As with the gospel account, the film shifts to several years later when John the Baptist announces the coming of the Messiah and Jesus asks to be baptized and John kneels at his feet.
