life superheroes in serial matinees. These types of heroic adventures inspired young George Lucas and Steven Spielberg to become filmmakers and introduce subsequent generations to the spine-tingling thrills they
received at the movies when they were children. This led to their collaboration in what would become one of the greatest cinematic adventure tales of all time, with audiences
flocking to see fedora-wearing archaeologist Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Producing a tale of such epic proportions required a thorough knowledge of the elements that when
combined could tell Indys story memorably, leaving a lasting impression in the minds of audiences. Lucas and Spielberg decided the most effective means by which to accomplish this was
through editing and sound. In the famous scene of the huge boulder rolling after archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones, the sound is appropriately booming and echoing the skipping beats of
Indys heart and of filmgoers in that amazing sequence. The opening scene is equally reinforced by the authentic sounds of the Peruvian interior, complete with "the chattering of
monkeys, the cries of exotic birds, the unidentifiable clicks and hisses of the jungle" (Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1995). In the tradition of another auteur director, Alfred Hitchcock,
