Godard, makes films that bear his own indelible creative imprint. If a moviegoer seeks conventional entertainment, a Baz Luhrmann film would be a poor choice. His films are
not for the passive; they are visual assaults to the senses that have become popular with the MTV music video generation. Luhrmann, himself a longtime fan of screen musicals,
decided to tackle the formidable challenge of resurrecting the genre that had showcased the talents of, among others, Busby Berkeley, Vincente Minnelli and Stanley Donen back in the 1930s, 40s
and 50s. The last successful musical was Randal Kleisers 1978 film, Grease, which remained true to the conventional format. This held no appeal to Baz Luhrmann; he wanted
to bring back the musical but on his own terms. The fruit of the filmmakers artistic labors is the visually dazzling Moulin Rouge, which took three years to go from
concept to celluloid. It bears absolutely no resemblance to John Hustons biographical motion picture of the same name and is the last of Luhrmanns "Red Curtain" trilogy, the first
two being the heavily staged Strictly Ballroom and the contemporary interpretation of William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet (Phillips B09). According to Luhrmann, "In Moulin Rouge, our ultimate Red Curtain
gesture, music and song is the device that releases us from a naturalistic world" (Litson Moulin Rouge). The film, which received rave reviews from audiences at the Cannes Film
Festival in May of 2001 was released in the United States on June 1 by Twentieth Century Fox. Moulin Rouge features Australian actress Nicole Kidman as courtesan (a combination
