a tale that is seen in many cultures. However, most people are generally familiar with the Disney cartoon film version more than they are with any particular written version of
the story. The following paper compares and contrasts the Grimm Brothers text version of the story of Cinderella with the Disney cartoon film version. Cinderella: Text and Film
The basic foundation of each of the versions begins essentially the same. There is a young woman whose mother has died and her father remarries. He marries a woman who
has two daughters who are apparently the same age as Cinderella and they are very cruel to Cinderella. In the Grimm version they are "beautiful and fair of face" (Brothers
Grimm). In the Disney film, however, they are essentially unattractive and all but hideous. On the other hand, in both versions they are unkind step-sisters. The Grimm Brothers version states
that they were "vile and black of heart." In addition, in the Disney version her father has died as well but in the Grimm version her father seems to be
still there, somehow oblivious to what is happening to Cinderella. The step mother also is a cruel woman in both versions, encouraging her daughters to be mean, forcing Cinderella to
clean and cook and be their servant. In both of the versions Cinderella becomes a slave to the step mother and step sisters. In the Disney version she sleeps in
a room, and is dressed is tattered clothing. But, she is called Cinderella because she cleans the fireplace so often she is covered in cinders, or so one assumes. In
the Grimm version Cinderella sleeps in front of the fireplace for she has no room: "she had no bed to go to, but had to sleep by the hearth in
