known with certainty concerning Cimabues life. While tradition attributes many notable works to Cimabue, there is insufficient documentary evidence that any of these works are definitively the work of Cimabue.
The only work that has been definitely proven to be by Cimabue is a portrait of St. John, which forms parts of a larger mosaic, which is located in the
Pisa Cathedral and dated 1302 (Kren and Marx). The following examination of Cimabue art and biography looks at what is known and what is speculated. Cimabue was a contemporary
of the poet Dante, who immortalized Cimabue by referring to him in his epic poem The Divine Comedy. In the section of the poem detailing Dantes passage through Purgatory, he
describes Cimabue as an artists who was "believed to hold the field in painting," but who was overshadowed by the fame of Giotto (Kren and Marx). While the intent of
the passage is to point out to Dantes readers the fleeting quality of earthly game, ironically this reference serves as the foundation for Cimabues reputation (Kren and Marx). Giorgio
Vasari, Cimabues Renaissance biographer wrote of the artists life three hundred years later in his text Lives of the Artists (Cimabue Images). Vasari spoke glowingly of Cimabue and relates
that he was born to a noble family and that he obtained his early art education from Greeks who had settled in Florence, but that he soon surpassed his masters
(Gillet). While there is considerable doubt about the accuracy of Vasaris account, he does offer an explanation for Cimabues descriptive nickname. Vasari writes that Cimabue would rather intentionally destroy one
of his work than hear any criticism, even from himself (Cimabue Images). His reputation for being obstinate is presumably what formed the impetus for his nickname of "Oxhead" (Cimabue Images).
