The phenomenon of cigarette smoking differs
from other forms of drug addiction in a number of ways, in terms of the level of its social acceptability, the way in which smokers are treated both by society
as a whole and the medical profession in particular, and the relationship which smoking has to issues relating to corporate business and advertising. However, it is evident from the studies
which have been carried out over the years that smoking is definitely addictive, that the addictive potential of nicotine may be as great as that of heroin, and that there
are a number of health risks which can be directly linked to cigarette smoking.
The reasons why people start smoking in the first place tend to be various, depending on age,
socio-economic status and a number of other factors. For example, during the 1940s and 1950s very little was known about the potential dangers of smoking, and there were few restrictions
on advertising campaigns promoting cigarettes. Smoking was depicted as sophisticated and adult, and considered a normal part of everyday social life. Consequently, young people tended to regard it as something
which demonstrated their adult status, and there was little information available to indicate that it might be harmful.
