In order to mount a successful advertising
campaign, there are a number of factors to be taken into account with regard to the target audience, the aims of the campaign, the way in which the product is
presented, and so on. The student should therefore consider these elements with specific reference to the selected advertisement. For example, since the advertisement is for cigarettes, it would be helpful
to consider what kind of people smoke - for instance, what socio-economic or cultural groups do they belong to - and whether the advertisement can be said to directly target
these groups.
Since most studies have shown that smokers tend to be drawn from the lower income brackets, it would therefore be appropriate to target such groups whilst ensuring that the main
point which the advertisement is making would not alienate other groups. In this case, it is clear that the main target audience is the working class family, since the first
picture portrays such a group.
