tried? Smokers who die young dont draw pensions? Many politicians smoke? Some politicians are paid huge amounts of money by tobacco companies to stop tough laws being passed? A ban
would make smoking more exciting? People who work for tobacco companies, or sell tobacco products, would be out of a job? Criminals would push tobacco alongside heroin and cocaine?" While
the rhetoric is clearly something done in jest, there is much truth in the answer. It is true that the government makes a lot of money on the tax it
imposes on smokers. Various governments raise their "sin" taxes quite often and they use the money to fund health care. Without cigarette taxes, the government might be short of those
funds. Also, there would certainly be a black market for it if they were illegal. Aside from such details-the politics, business losses, and monetary losses-the truth is that many addictive
drugs are banned for the sake of society. The society is heading toward a total ban on cigarettes with many states outlawing smoking even in parks or other outdoor areas.
Above all, the FDA outlaws any dangerous medication that finds itself on the market and also, there are many controlled substances. Yet, cigarettes are legal even though they are thought
to be deadly. It is true that cigarettes are legal, and the taxes do help to support government-funded elements that benefit society, but it would be wrong to keep cigarettes
legal and available just for the purposes of funding. The same argument has been made for marijuana but the government rejects the notion of legalizing it just for control and
