St. Clouds and it is here that Homer Wells is born. "In the hospital of the orphanage- the boys division at St. Clouds Maine- two nurses were in charge of naming the new babies and checking that their little penises were healing from the obligatory circumcision" (Irving 1). This was the environment into which Homer is born. During his childhood he is adopted by three different families, all of which mean well but eventually return him to the orphanage. Interestingly enough, the doctor at the facility, Dr. Larch, would rather that Homer stay on and not be adopted for he finds Homer to be a very effective and efficient helper when it comes to performing abortions and delivering the babies. In noting any interesting or perhaps controversial subjects of the book we look briefly at the issue of abortion. Although Homer assists the doctor in abortions he does not necessarily like it. He believes that all fetuses have souls. He states, "an abortion should be available to anyone who wants one, but I never want to perform one" (Irving NA). We see another character come into the story, the character of Wally Worthington. He is from a wealthy family who owns a apple cider business. Homer meets him when Wally brings his girl friend, Candy, to the orphanage to get an abortion. Wally, Homer, and Candy all become very close friends until Homer goes with Wally to the orchard where he will live and work for the next twenty years. With this change comes a change in Homer. It is a new beginning and he realizes that his past, the orphanage experiences, are "supposed to be left behind" (Irving NA). In the meantime Wally becomes a captain in the Air Force during WWII.
