of John Ciardi and Alfred Noyes thrill children decades after their poetry was written. This can be attributed to what Ciardi called the poets "responsibility" to his reader to create
imagery through words that transcends the formal form of the poetry. Both poets felt this responsibility deeply, and in almost a religious sense, they created worlds that enlightened and entertained,
and also provided a message. It is the story embedded in the poetry that becomes the reason the poems are savored through time. As Mallon muses, the words of the
poet are remembered since grade school for this reason. The story is unforgettable, and he remembers it for its style. Literature Review
Lioli compares Ciardis poetry to Puritan white literature, saying that Ciardi wrote in the style and aesthetic of the "dark white" immigrants who
entered the country after the war ended in 1924. (Lioli 142). This new style reflected the creation of "natures nation," and started the assimilation of a vast number of ethnicities,
including Anglo-Americans. Ciardi and other poets of the day, Lioli writes, wanted to express a shared, antagonistic experience, and in the process
radicalized poetry. This is attributed to Ciardi and di Prima, who brought with them fascist ideas and a belief in the "real presence of Christ" in the liturgical tradition (Lioli
