what the British government knew and when they knew it. Some experts believe that Churchill knew well in advance that the Germans were going to bomb Coventry because the British
governments Ultra operation had already broken the German Enigma code. These experts have advanced the theory that Churchill intentionally withheld warning from Coventry officials so that the Germans would not
be alerted that the code had been broken. On the other hand, other experts, who had personal knowledge of the circumstances, maintain that Churchill was under the impression that it
was London, and not Coventry that was to be bombed and that the British government had little or no advance warning of the true target of the raid. A
close examination of the information that has been established from historical sources shows that the truth lies somewhere in the middle. It does appear that the government did not have
the knowledge of the true target for any considerable length of time before the raid; however, there were several hours where the true target was confirmed, yet Coventry officials were
not notified. Whether this was an intentional strategy, a misunderstanding, or a bureaucratic oversight is difficult to determine. Why bomb Coventry? The history of the city of Coventry goes
back to the Middle Ages, and was first settled in the seventh century (Longmate 13). Prior to the 1940-bombing raid, Coventry was best known as the site of Ladys Godivas
famous ride. During the time immediately after the 1940 bombing, the general populace believed the raid to be a German "terror" attack upon a small, peaceful town that had no
reason to expect it, being so far inland (Longmate 13). Presumably, the Germans showed their "true colors" in mounting the attack and this was used as justification for numerous reprisals
