the Atlantic slave trade, with approximately five hundred thousand heading for the United States. The inhumane treatment these oppressed individuals received throughout the journey was ultimately responsible for some
ten million deaths en route (Brown, 1997). The deforming mirror of truth originated with Americas constitutional Framers and the blatant move away from
democracy they demonstrated by establishing a "model totalitarian society" (Huggins, 1990, p. PG); purposefully omitting the words slave or slavery when composing the Constitution clearly reflected the desire to "sanitize
their new creation" (Huggins, 1990, p. PG) and dodge "the deforming mirror of truth" (p. PG). It has been argued that this alleged pledge towards freedom and democracy was
nothing more than a veiled perpetuation of subjugation and was "a bad way to start" (Huggins, 1990, p. PG). Clearly, black men and American culture have long existed as
a synergistic force - the more that blacks did for the whites, the better off white became for the black mans efforts. Assimilating into the white mans culture was
not an option: If the black community was to persevere, it had to adapt and become part of the seamless web. Although Reconstruction
began during the war, the time period traditionally associated with it is 1862-1877. The political, social and economic conditions after the Civil War defined the goals for Reconstruction.
These goals were essentially to rebuild the Souths economy on the basis of free labor, readmitting the Southern states within the Union, and integrating the African Americans into the social
fabric of American society. Lincoln would be responsible for announcing a comprehensive plan for Reconstruction (Franklin et al, 2000). When the Reconstruction
