Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 4 page research paper that discusses a web site entitled "An 'Average' Day" which records a first-person account by a woman how has chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), as well as fibromyalgia (FM), which also afflicts her husband. This detailed description of the woman's symptoms and activities shows how the concept of chronicity and illness trajectory can aid a health professional in understanding the phase of this patient's illness and the way it impacts her life. fibromyalgia (FM), which also afflicts her husband. This detailed description of the womans symptoms and activities shows how the concept of chronicity and illness trajectory can aid a health professional
in understanding the phase of this patients illness and the way it impacts her life. The Corbin and Strauss Chronic Illness Trajectory Model identifies 9 different phases that collectively
describe the course of a chronic illness, which range from illness onset to death due to the chronic condition. The unstable phase is "characterized by exacerbation of illness symptoms" (Day,
et al, 2007, p. 154). This patient appears to be caught in the unstable phase because of the extreme pain and chronic distress that she describes. While in many cases,
medical intervention can help a patient stabilize symptoms, there is little hope for medical intervention in this case being able to accomplish this task because the patient is allergic to
the majority of medications available for treating her conditions. Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a "condition characterized by disabling fatigue," which is accompanied by a variety of symptoms, such
as muscle pain, sore throat, headache, etc. (Anderson, et al, 2002, p. 362). Fibromyalgia (FM) is a "form of nonarticular rheumatism" (Anderson, et al, 2002, p. 676). MCS, of course,
refers to being allergic to multiple forms of stimuli. Chronic illness not only impacts the patient, but also the patients family and particularly the patients spouse, causing increased "worry, anxiety
and stress" (Gordon and Perrone, 2004, p. 27). This patient indicates that her husband does the majority of the cooking in their household and also has to chauffeur her when
symptoms flare and prevent her from driving safely. In the trajectory model of illness, the "trajectory scheme" refers to more than simply any medical treatment plans that are in
