paintings have fascinated viewers and fellow artists since their creation in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Typically filled with gruesome "monsters and chimeras" that torture souls in medieval

birth name was Jeroen van Aeken and he was born in Hertogenbosch, which is located in present-day Netherlands in 1450 (Patrick 127). One of six children, he came from an
artistic family, as his father, grandfather, two of his uncles and two brothers, were all painters (Patrick 127). In signing his paintings "Jheronimus Bosch," an allusion to his hometown, rather
than using his family name, early on, Bosch signaled his intention to be independent from his familys art and establish his own path (Patrick 128). He achieved financial independence quite
