Introduction/ History Christopher Marlow (1564-1593), poet, dramatist (he wrote a total of six plays) and, contemporary of Shakespeare, wrote lavishly, and died wildly at the age of 29. Thematically, he wrote of great personalities doomed to fail by the limitations they placed upon themselves. According to Parks (1999) he relied heavily on the "Chronicles" of the time, largely Holinsheds, and the work has been labeled, by some researchers as a "chronicle play." Chronicles were unique English documents that served as histories of the times. By reading the chronicles of the period, according to Parks we can see how Marlowe adapted real history into his narrative. Today we might say that the chronicles of the Elizabethans, contained as much variety as the grocery tabloids of today: The lengthy writings of Fabyan, Stow, and Holinshed "balance a number of different concerns, intermingling the story of the growing rift between Edward and his barons with recurrent attention to London events and citizen concerns, with accounts of the weather, and with the record of trials, battles against Scotland, and famine. London crowds viewing Edwards wedding procession trample a citizen to death, the Turks are forced from Rhodes and the Knights Templar arrested, natural disasters and livestock disease afflict the countryside, and a tanners son claims to be the thrones rightful heir, later confessing that he was urged to this treason by his feline-shaped familiar."
