who would argue that he was an ignorant man who brought nothing of value to those he "discovered." With tha tin mind the following paper examines how Columbus is seen
as both a hero and a villain by the Native American community. Christopher Columbus One important truth to note in examining who Christopher Columbus was and why he
was, and is, seen in different ways, relates to the path of history itself. As one author notes, "In recent years the Columbus story has darkened, with the once-heroic explorer
turned into a conqueror guilty of rape and genocide" and that "Columbuss accomplishments have always been remembered differently by every generation" (Gibson, 2005). Even his life is somehow obscure and
as such it seems that every generation sees Columbus differently, based on the historical focus of the time and the information that slowly seems to come to the surface. And,
this is something that clearly applies to the Native American community as well for they are clearly part of the modern world and modern education to one extent or another.
One of the ways in which Native Americans could see Columbus as a hero involves the simplicity of the man himself, in relationship to his curiosity and his desire
to explore new areas, and prove truths such as the fact that the earth was round. All peoples can appreciate an explorer with a curious mind. It may well be
that Columbus was not necessarily a very good leader or a man who understood the ramifications of his actions but he was a man who, in his most simple existence,
