Translating this stage to childrens asthma is easy because there is a multitude of data and information published about it. Heres what we know. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways and it affects up to 10 percent of American children (Bruzzese, et al., 2010). That means that more than 6.8 million children in the U.S. suffer from asthma, which has an effect on all aspects of daily life. Children lose schools days and parents lose work days. This directly impacts the childs education and the parents productivity. Add medical costs and the total cost is about two billion per year (Bruzzese, et al., 2010). We also know that asthma affects more low-income and minority children. In spite of the widespread efforts to reduce these numbers, the rates of asthma between White children and Black and Hispanic children continues to widen (Roy & Wisnivesky, 2010). Indoor allergens play a strong role in asthma and low-income families have less healthy living conditions than most White families (Roy & Wisnivesky, 2010). This may be one reason for the difference. The second component in Christoffels framework is strategy. This involves activities that use the information to identify what needs to change to improve the problems. Information needs to be conveyed to professional and lay audiences.
