Stole Feminism?" proposes that in the US, the feminist movement is dominated by a group of women who are intent on creating an image of American society as a "male
hegemony," in which "the dominant gender works to keep women cowering and submissive" (16). To persuade women to this point of view, these "gender feminists," as Sommers refers to them,
are constantly looking for "proof" that will persu!ade the American public that the system is intrinsically rigged against the female gender. Sommers argues that these women are creating a backlash
against feminism, in general, as women turn away from the anger and resentfulness (18). In other words, Sommers believes that the militant activists among the womens movement are giving feminism
a bad name?that these gender feminists have "stolen feminism from a mainstream that...never acknowledge their leadership" (18). The following is a summation of Sommers book. Chapter 1 : Women Under
