On the other hand, so many religious sites have been started, it seems to be a resource for Christians and it is also a way to spread the word. There is certainly debate in churches regarding Internet usage, but how often are Christians surfing and what are the doing online? One report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project concluded that 64 % of users surveyed do use the Internet to explore their faith (Newbart, 2004). That means that close to 82 million Americans are using the net for religious activity (2004). Other statistics suggest that about 25 % (Kellogg, 2000, p.29) of 100 million Americans using the Internet, use it for religious purposes. It is clear that many Christians are using the Internet, but what are they doing exactly? The types of religious activity that can be accomplished online is varied, but the utilization of e-mail to "spread the gospel" is the most common activity (Newbart, 2004). It seems that Christians are not shopping much online. However, they are using e-mail for religious purposes. It should be noted that 40 % (2004, p.12) of Internet users in general claim that they have either sent or received e-mail messages that have spiritual content. About 35 % (2004, p.12) explain that they do send mail like online greeting cards for religious holidays and 32 % (2004, p.12) actively seek religious materials. One pew survey showed that 30% (2004, p.12) of users experienced the net for religious activity but it seems that this is an increase from use in the past.
