The following paper examines that thematic element in Behns book and discusses how it likely represents the personal believes of the author. Christianity and Behns Oroonoko The first
indication which speaks of a distrust of the Christians, and thus leads to an understanding that these people lack honor, comes through the following passage from Behns story: "Nor did
he use those obligations ill, that love had done him, but turned all his happy moments to the best advantage; and as he knew no vice, his flame aimed at
nothing but honor, if such a distinction may be made in love; and especially in that country, where men take to themselves as many as they can maintain; and where
the only crime and sin with woman is to turn her off, to abandon her to want, shame, and misery: such ill morals are only practiced in Christian countries, where
they prefer the bare name of religion; and, without virtue or morality, think that sufficient." This essentially sets the stage for a theme that speaks of they hypocritical nature of
the Christian and the truth regarding Christians as they hide behind the name of religion itself. Another excerpt occurs wherein Oroonoko is given a foundation for the faith of
