in the world at that time. It was always in turmoil with one battle or one war or another being waged. The Greco-Roman world consists of the all the lands
around the Mediterranean between the years 300 B.C. to 300 A.D. Those years cover the rule of Alexander the Great to the rule of the Roman Emperor Constantine (Medford Congregational
United Church of Christ, 2010). It was Alexander the Great who spread the Greek culture and religion to much of the rest of the world at that time (Medford
Congregational United Church of Christ, 2010). Later, however, the Roman Empire would conquer and rule the lands (Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, 2010). Christ was born under the reign
of a Roman emperor. No matter who the ruler was, people were expected to worship the gods of the state. There were many religious beliefs in the First Century, some
were polytheistic, some were pagan and some were monotheistic. Roman and Greek cultures had gods for individual cities (Bonz, 1998). The Greeks worshipped the gods of Mount Olympus which was
led by Zeus (Bonz, 1998). The Romans also had a family of gods, led by Jupiter, each of whom was related to some aspect of life (Bonz, 1998). By
the First Century, the gods of the two empires began to merge but Jupiter was still perceived as a more serious god than Zeus, perhaps because Zeus had been involved
