religions, the celebration of life-rites - birth, marriage and death - tend to have elements which are almost identical in structure and function, and at the same time are so
diverse in their details that it would be impossible to mistake the rituals of one faith or belief system for that of another. At the same time, however, some belief
systems have become so fragmented and diversified over time that even though they might have nomenclature in common, the elements of doctrine, dogma and ritual practice in the various branches
now bear little resemblance to one another. This being the case for both Christianity and Judaism, I have taken the marriage and funeral rites from Catholic Christianity and Orthodox Judaism
as examples: it should be noted, however, that these rituals will be conducted somewhat differently within other branches and denominations of these belief systems. Jewish marriage rituals.
As noted by Mechon Mamre1 , the Jewish marriage rite is divided into
two parts, the kiddushin and the nisuin. Kiddushin is loosely analogous to betrothal in other cultures, but is more binding than, say, a secular engagement would be. The prospective husband
offers the marriage contract, and the woman accepts: this is a contractual obligation which can only be broken by death or divorce and as Mechon Mamre notes, there is now
a legal marriage relationship between the two parties. The term "kiddushin" refers both to the sanctity of the relationship, and the fact that it sets the couple apart from others
- the root word means something set apart specifically for a sacred purpose.
