fights to the death. In terms of Christian traditions, there is loyalty and truthfulness. There is the unending love of a parent who has a hard time letting go, and
will do anything to avenge the death of her baby. Indeed, the poem that has survived for centuries has values that many in the twenty-first century like to uphold. Also,
the old piece of literature is considered to be important as the complexity and richness of the work seems to indicate that it was indeed a relevant poem; further, it
probably survived due to its superior quality and fame (McCoy and Harlan 9). Clearly, the combination of revenge and motherhood may not appear to go together, but
the author weaves the two entities into the work. It is important to understand that in the heroic tradition, Beowulf is a conqueror of sorts. He kills the monster Grendel.
What is often not apparent in many works is that the deceased have mothers. In watching films or reading books with enemies, or evil men, who are killed, the victor
is applauded. That does not occur in Beowulf. It is almost anticlimactic that Grendels mother returns with a vengeance and she is a rather powerful enemy. Thus, one sees heroic
feats on either end, but also, there is Christian love and the love of a parent that is held high. In the fight between the pair, Grendel is ultimately
defeated. In this work, what the author does is to take away the glory of the victory obtained by Beowulf through showing the grief of a parent and the art
of revenge. Some authors have called revenge sweet, but Grendels mother is killed at the end as well. That does take away from the good feelings one might have at
