War Theory, which says that sometimes there is moral justification for resorting to a an armed conflict between states (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2005). Just war theory was supported by
such Christian notables as Augustine and Aquinas; it was also supported by others such as Grotius, Vitoria and Walzer (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2005). A great deal of credit is
given to Augustine for founding just war theory but others also contributed greatly to this perspective of ethics and war, dating back to Aristotle (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2005).
There are three large categories comprising Just War Theory: 1) jus ad bellum, which concerns the justice of resorting to war in the first place; 2) jus in bello,
which concerns the justice of conduct within war, after it has begun; and 3) jus post bellum, which concerns the justice of peace agreements and the termination phase of war
(Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2005). Due to space limitations, only jus ad bellum will be discussed. There are six criteria for a just war under this category; all six criteria
are required to consider any war a just war: 1. Just cause. This is the most critical rule. Just cause includes: self-defense; defense of others; protection of innocent persons from
aggressive regimes, punishment for a wrongdoing that has not been corrected. Iraqs 1990 invasion into Kuwait is an example of a just war in terms of other states helping
to defend the state. Another example is the situation in Rwanda in 1994 where the government turned savagely against its own people. A final example is the al-Qaeda terrorist attack
