Religious intonation can be found in every literary genre. Even the most diverse of these genres can, in fact, provide insight
into questions revolving around the meaning of religion, the purpose of a higher power, and mans place in that purpose when contrasted against one another. Such is even the
case with Louise Endrichs "The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse" and Shakespeares "Hamlet". Hamlet, of course, comes to us from the genre of classic literature.
"The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse" is a modern novel portraying life among the Ojibwe people in the early twentieth century. Despite their contrasts,
each of these works of literature provide significant insight to mankinds construct of religion. Each could, in fact, be classified as a Christian tragedy.
While most readers are familiar with Shakespeares Hamlet, comparatively few have heard of "The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse". In "The Last Report
on the Miracles at Little No Horse" Endrich introduces the reader to the captivating Father Damien Modeste. Modeste is just one representative of the many generations of Church representatives
that have pummeled the Ojibwe with its Christian doctrine. Endrichs book, however, is not so much about the persecution of one people and belief system by another people and
belief system but rather about contrast. The most vivid contrast in the book in fact comes to us in the form of Father Modeste. Modeste it seems is
not all he appears to be, indeed not all that he has appeared to be for the entirety of his lifes work on the remote reservation of Little No Horse.
