home, Mrs. Eddy (as she is referred to in the Christian Science faith) was plagued by poor health throughout her childhood and into her adult years. She received little in the way of formal education and was semi-illiterate (Miller, 1999). This motivated her to study alternative forms of healing. Her studies in this area intensified after the death of her first husband. She remarried in 1853. At the age of 41, Mrs. Eddy sought a cure from a healer named Phineas P. Quimby (1802-1866), a clockmaker, with little education (Anonymous, 2001). Quimby had developed a method of natural healing that involved techniques in hypnotism and animal magnetism (Anonymous, 2001). Intrinsic to this system was an emphasis on the role of the human mind in achieving health. Mrs. Eddy was a student of Quimby until his death in 1866. At first Mrs. Eddys health improved under Quimbys care, but t hen she suffered a relapse. After falling on some ice and suffering severe injury, she was not expected to live. However, at this time, it came to Mrs. Eddy that healing did not originate out of bodily processes, but rather came from the Divine Mind of God, and with this realization, she was instantly cured (Anonymous, 2001). She wrote a book that described her new beliefs entitled Science and Health, which was published in 1875. In 1877, she married Asa Gilbert Eddy and adopted the name by which she is commonly remembered. The first Christian Science church was founded in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1879 (Anonymous, 2001).
