-October, 2001 properly! In Geoffrey Chaucers medieval masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales, the Pardoner is portrayed as being
hypocritical and totally corrupt-someone who masqueraded as a Christian in order to con people out of their money. However, some critics argue that the Pardoners Prologue and Tale constitute a
"confession" and, therefore, a refutation of his sinful ways. Was the Pardoner a Christian? In order to ascertain the answer to this question, one must first decide on what it
means to be a Christian. To be Christian - truly Christian - requires more then merely stating a belief in the redemptive power of Jesus Christ.
People, throughout history, who have mouthed the words and then acted in accordance with their own selfish desires were not Christian, no matter how devout they felt themselves to be.
To be truly Christian is to be Christ-like, to incorporate Jesus dictums for behavior - the golden rule, loving ones neighbor, etc. - into the very fabric of everyday life.
Ostensibly, the Pardoner is a man of God. However, in the prologue to his tale, the Pardoner goes to great pains to elucidate his fellow travelers on how he
connives to get as much money from parishioners as he possibly can, and is blatant about how he revels in the sin that he preaches against. Nevertheless, the tale ends
