stem cell research is heated and is debated on legal, moral and ethical grounds. Father Joseph Howard, executive director of the American Bioethics Advisory Commission, commented: Theres no shortage of
scientific evidence showing the promise of ethical research from stem cells taken from adult tissue and theres also no shortage of studies which confirm the destructive effects of unethical experimentation
on stem cells taken from embryonic babies" (American Bioethics Advisory Commission, 2001). That is the crux of the matter. It is not stem cell research, in general, that is under
fire; it is specifically stem cell research from embryos (Balint, 2002). This is where the ethical and moral controversy exists. The reason for the controversy has to do with the
discrete origination of life, in other words, when does human life begin? Does it begin at conception? Does it begin when all parts of the body are formed? When it
is capable of sustaining its own life outside of the womb? Exactly when? This is a philosophical issue as well as an ethical one. Whatcott explained that embryonic stem
cells are early forms of life and these cells are capable of dividing indefinitely and still maintain stem cell activity (Whatcott, 2002). The reason these cells are called stem cells
is because they are like a stem, these cells are the source of every kind of tissue that is found in the human body and because of their characteristics, they
hold remarkable promise and potential in eliminating any number of horrific health conditions (Whatcott, 2002). Many argue that although the embryo is destroyed the good outweighs the bad because these
may well provide cures for things like heart disease, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, cancer and other serious medical problems (Whatcott, 2002). Howard explained that ethical research that is performed on placental blood,
