In many ways, however, Protestant and Catholic views have not been so greatly opposed in the past. Certainly the groups claim themselves
to be very different from each other, and Protestants have claimed for centuries now that the believers primary accountability is to God Himself, rather than to the earthly intermediary that
the Catholics have claimed to be necessary. Neither side realized that, with only relatively few exceptions, each taught that the believers primary accountability was to his church. Increasingly,
God always risked being left out as church leaders - whether Protestant or Catholic - were more than willing to interpret Gods word for him.
The Inexorable Pull of Scripture The Presbyterians caused a general uproar among conservative evangelical Christians several years ago when the
national-level association sought to be more in tune with society while also appearing to be more "politically correct." They chose to open the annual meeting with a native American
dance intended to chase away evil spirits, rather than adhere to the words of Bible: "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from
you. Come near to God and he will come near to you" (James 4:7, NIV). It is a grounding in scripture that
