is story which affirms the power of God and how redemption is achieved through suffering and paying for ones sins. Others argue that it is nothing more than a story
which illustrates the bleak realities associated with life itself. Bearing that in mind the following paper examines the Christian elements of the play, arguing that it is a play about
how redemption can be found and how the ways of God are mysterious. The paper focuses on Act V Scene III. King Lear and Christian Thought In the
very beginning of Act V Scene III we note a reference perhaps to those who have been persecuted for their faith when Cordelia states: "We are not the first Who,
with best meaning, have incurrd the worst. For thee, oppressed king, am I cast down; Myself could else out-frown false fortunes frown." In this we gain a powerful understanding of
how the play may well relate to the realities of faith as Cordelia and her father face their imminent death. They will be punished, yet they are not the first
nor will they likely be the last. This is a very powerful theme in Christian beliefs for many Christians, especially Christians around the time this play was written, had been
persecuted and killed for their faith. We also note that throughout the play Lear slowly develops into a man who understands his errors. He is not a man who
is necessarily afraid to face these truths either. He is prepared to die and take that which is owed him for his errors. In essence, he is a man who
is not arguing against God and his sins, but a man who knows that somehow he must pay. This is a reflection of the faith in Christianity which supports the
