As Luther so aptly pointed out centuries ago, Christian perspective and values should be influential in shaping business attitudes, particularly in regards to products that have the potential to harm
the public, such as alcohol and tobacco. Considering this, the question arises as to whether or not Christian merchants have a duty not to sell, market or distribute a
product that is known to cause harm. Adam Smith, in his description of capitalist theory, The Wealth of Nations, perceived business activity as transpiring against a backdrop provided by
Christian values and morality. Smith argues that "as long as there are effective competitive market forces and self-control on the part of individuals, individuals economic self-interested actions will be turned
toward the common good by the individual hand of the market" (Clark 260). Nevertheless, despite this perspective, numerous sources of societal harm and human rights abuses evolved along with capitalist
systems and the early history of industrialization. Today, theologians such as Shirley Roels have considered the ethics and implications of being both Christian and a businessperson, that is, "What can
be learned about business as a Christian calling from the Bible" (Roels 357). The first point that Roels is that business, like all human activity, finds its origin in
Gods plan for humanity, that is, the "responsibilities of business are rooted in a divine mandate to fill and care for the garden" (Roels 357). God intends for His creation
to flourish, which means that profit should not be regarded as an end in itself, but merely as a vehicle that enables the business to contribute to the general welfare
