Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 6 page paper that discusses the various concerns of the
Christian counselor. Method used by traditional researchers and psychologists are
discussed. In addition we compare these strategies to the counseling techniques of Jesus
who was perhaps, the greatest counselor ever in existence. Unfortunately, due to Jesus’
unique spiritual existence, we can never hope to truly understand his techniques nor his
level of understanding and compassion. We can only use his examples as guides in
treating people with respect and understanding that each and every individual sees their
life, and life in general, as very different. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

industry that takes many things into consideration that the average counseling community does not, but perhaps should. Christian-based counseling involves, obviously, concerns of the Christian community, but yet also provides
many different avenues of thought for other counselors as well, in light of the fact that it incorporates some very basic needs of humanity. These basic needs are often directly
involved with the individuals need for acceptance and understanding. This has not often been a part of traditional counseling methods. In examining the needs of Christian-based counseling we discuss the
terms existential and phenomenological and illustrate how they fit into the realm of Christian-based counseling, and other types of counseling as well. In addressing the field of Christian-based psychology,
we first examine some of the important aspects of psychology as it relates counseling. Two very important aspects of psychology, that will later be discussed in reference to Christian counseling,
are phenomenological and existential concerns. According to Amedeo Giorgi, as provided in a fax by the student, the characteristics of a phenomenological approach are important to understand: "to the average
psychologist, to do research means to perform an experiment, and to perform an experiment means to follow the methods and procedures that have been established by the naturals sciences. It
is this automatic chain of associations that must be broken. Since it is one of the characteristic of the phenomenological approach to investigate the foundational aspects of phenomena, the phenomenological
psychologist begins by asking the following questions: Why does one do an experiment? Why does a scientist engage in research? Are doing research and conducting an experiment identical activities?" (17-18).
