Ofili was born in England and Basquiat in the United States but both contemporary artists are known for addressing social realities, positions, and conflicts as it related to their African
heritage. The following paper compares and contrasts two paintings, Ofilis Monkey Magic and Basquiats Flexible. Chris Ofili and Jean-Michel Basquiat Chris
Ofili Monkey Magic - Sex, Money and Drugs, was created in 1999 (MOCA.org [2], 2008). It consists of "Acrylic, collage, glitter, resin, pencil, map pins, and elephant dung on canvas"
and measures "96 x 72 in." (MOCA.org [2], 2008). It is a painting that has many tribal elements, in relationship to bright colors, the antique form of the monkey, and
the rigid delineation of color and form. But, it is also very lyrical and contemporary in its use of color and form as well. The mosaic quality of the circles
in the background, which almost seems to mimic an hour glass, speaks of a far more modern and contemporary approach to the relatively ancient topic or image of a monkey.
One author, however, claims that this use of dots is something that is "inspired in part by cave paintings in Zimbabwe, with collaged images from popular magazines" (Cmoa, 2008).
Jean-Michel Basquiat Flexible was created in 1984 (MOCA.org [3], 2008). It is "Acrylic and oil paintstick on wood" and measures "102 x 75
inches" (MOCA.org [3], 2008). It is also a very primitive style of painting in many ways and the image on the painting offers the viewer the same sense of antiquity
