differs from Gardners real life story in the details. However, the themes of the book, that is, never giving up on dreams and ambition and the supreme importance of family,
are consistent between the book and the film. As a film cannot possibly include all the elements covered in book form, certain aspects of Gardners life were left out
of the film. For example, Gardner describes the difficulties of his childhood, such as his "stepfathers abuse of his mother" (Newman). He also describes the time he spent in the
military, as well as in medicine (Newman), and this these periods of his life are not dramatized in the film. In a recent speech that Gardner gave in Chicago,
in honor of the birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Gardner commented on the fact that the film deviated from his actual life story in that his son, Christopher,
was played by 5-year-old Jaden Smith, son of the films star, Will Smith, who played Gardner. Gardner said, "Many people dont know that at this time in my life, my
son was actually 14 months old" (Scarver). Obviously, the filmmakers cast Christopher as an older child in order to increase the dramatic possibilities in relating Gardners story. For example,
having Christopher older, and therefore capable of understanding valuable life lessons, made it possible to dramatize the scene that Gardner showed as part of his presentation. In this scene, Smith
(as Gardner) teaches his son the "important lesson of never allowing anyone to tell you what you cant accomplish" (Scarver). As a toddler, Christopher was not aware that he and
his father were homeless. During an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," Christopher was asked what was his most significant memory from his early childhood and he said that
