have such freedoms. One critic describes it as follows: "Kate Chopins 1899 novel The Awakening depicts a womans struggle to find and to assert her essential self within the cultural
constraints of late 19th century America" (Klein). It is the story of Edna, a woman who finds she wants more from life, more independence, than is offered women. As the
story progresses and she seeks that identity she ultimately comes to a position where she knows she will never have what she needs and thus ends her life. Although the
story does not take place over a very long span of time, one could see how the story is somewhat symbolic of an entire life. From one perspective it could
be noted that her story begins with her being stodgy and elderly and the story ends with her youth and then infancy and her return to the womb. The following
paper analyzes the story from this symbolic perspective. The Beginning In the very beginning of the story the reader is introduced
to Edna as she and her family are vacationing at a beach. At this point it is clear perhaps that she is already beginning to relinquish somewhat stodgy and elderly
ways, but at the same time there are serious hints about her controlled and adequately "mature" life. In many ways the reader can see her as mature and elderly through
subtle imagery that offers such a symbolic understanding. For example, at one point, "She held up her hands, strong, shapely hands, and surveyed them critically" (Chopin Chapter I). This is
