scandalized readers when it was published. Chopins reputation was ruined and it wasnt until fairly recently that people began to read her again, and understand that she was describing the
lives of far too many women when she dissected the lives of her anguished heroines. This paper analyzes her very short story, The Story of an Hour, and argues that
societys demand that she play only one role, that of devoted wife, killed Mrs. Mallard. Discussion Chopins stories are extremely well-done. They are both moving and intriguing because she is
able to portray womens emotions very well, but without "hitting the reader over the head" with her message. Instead, she reveals her characters thoughts and feelings indirectly, allowing them to
solve the puzzle on their own. This is the way people tend to behave in real life. They dont stand and give long speeches about their feelings; they keep them
to themselves especially if, as in this case, the feelings they have are not the feelings society tells them they should have. The society in which Mrs. Mallard lives has
very strict "rules" for women. Its 1894, and they are supposed to be wives and mothers, and nothing else. Furthermore, they are supposed to find fulfillment and happiness in their
marriage, even if they marry the wrong man, hes abusive, a drunk, or a womanizer. This was womans place at the time. Therefore, when Mrs. Mallard reveals that she isnt
happy, shes revealing herself to be "out of step" with her society, and readers will probably tend to sympathize with her. Shes fighting against the type of conformity that keeps
her from being the person she could be, the person she wants to be. Although she lives only a short time after she feels herself to be free, she lives
