Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page research paper that focuses on the career of Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), who was one of the romantic era’s most original composers, as his musical idiom was unlike any other (Machlis 84). Furthermore, he was the only major composer of this era whose genius was completely centered on the piano, as Chopin’s “imagination was wedded to the keyboard” and he created his “universe within that narrow frame” (Machlis 84). This examination of Chopin as a pianist and as a teacher demonstrates the extraordinary influence that his life and career had on subsequent generations of composers, but particularly within the realm of the piano. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

within the realm of the piano. Chopins technique and musical style The principal limitation of the piano is its inability to sustain a tone for any great length of
time, even by using the sustain pedal. Chopin overcame this limitation and, in doing so, can be credited with producing the "modern piano style" (Machlis 84). Chopin did this by
employing "widely spaced chords in the bass," which were sustained by the pedal, while setting up "masses of tone that wreathe the melody in enchantment" (Machlis 84). Chopin told his
piano students that "Everything must be made to sing" (Machlis 84). Indeed, everything within Chopins music, all of its delicate ornamentation, such as "trills, grace notes, (and) runs of gossamer
lightness," have the effect of prolonging the sonority of single tones, as if by magic (Machlis 84). Chopins genius placed all of these elements so well in regards to the
pianists hand that the "music seems almost to play itself" (Machlis 84). Therefore, it is probably not surprising that so many of Chopins works remain in the modern professional
pianists repertory. Chopins Nocturnes, Preludes, and Etudes are widely played. According to Machlis, a "study piece" is a composition that "concentrates on a specific technical problem such as octaves, rapid
arpeggios or trills" (Machlis 84). Chopins Etudes "crow the literature of the study piece," as with Chopins hands "piano technique is transformed into poetry" (Machlis 84). Chopins genius and creativity
